Edward Burne-Jones: Pygmalion & the Image Notecards with Envelopes

Edward Burne-Jones (English, 18331898) attended Oxford University, where he befriended William Morris and several other artists. Perhaps best known for his association with the Pre-Raphaelites and later with the Aesthetic Movement, Burne-Jones, like Morris, also demonstrated considerable design skills. In addition to his masterful paintings, Burne-Jones produced beautiful works of stained glass, jewelry, tapestry, and tile as well as illustrating books. Regarding his paintings, the mostly self-taught Burne-Jones often drew inspiration from myths, legends, and spiritual stories. For his Pygmalion and the Image series, of which he painted two versions, Burne-Jones depicted the ancient story of an artist (Pygmalion) who falls in love with a sculpture he has created. Pygmalion then appeals to the goddess of love and beauty, who is sympathetic to his plight and brings the statue to life. This story also appears in The Earthly Paradise, an epic poem written by Burne-Joness lifelong friend William Morris.
